Course Description
Cyber Threats in Education: A Practical Guide for K–12 Leaders is an 8-hour, leadership-focused professional course designed to help school districts understand, prepare for, and respond to the growing cyber risks facing today’s educational environments.
Led by Amanda Lanicek, Chief Technology Officer at Springtown ISD, this course delivers a practical, no-nonsense view of cybersecurity from inside a K–12 district. Participants gain real-world insight into how cyber incidents actually unfold in schools—and what leaders, not just IT teams, must do to reduce risk and protect students, staff, and operations.
Instruction focuses on realistic cyber threats such as ransomware, phishing, data breaches, compromised credentials, vendor risk, and system outages—while emphasizing the leadership, policy, and decision-making responsibilities that sit outside the IT department. The course bridges the gap between technical risk and executive accountability, helping superintendents, administrators, and school leaders ask the right questions and make informed decisions.
Participants will also examine incident response, communication, continuity of learning, and recovery planning, with special attention to regulatory requirements, student data privacy, and coordination with legal, insurance, and law enforcement partners.
Designed for non-technical and technical leaders alike, this course equips K–12 decision-makers with actionable strategies to strengthen cyber resilience without requiring a technical background. The program meets continuing education standards and supports professional development in education leadership, risk management, and cyber preparedness.
