Course Description

Converged Security for K–12: Where Physical and Cyber Meet is an 8-hour, leadership-focused professional course designed to help school districts understand and manage the growing intersection between physical security systems and cybersecurity risks.

Led by Amanda Lanicek, Chief Technology Officer at Springtown ISD, this course provides real-world insight into how modern K–12 security ecosystems—such as access control, video surveillance, visitor management, emergency communications, and cloud-based platforms—create both safety advantages and new cyber vulnerabilities.

Participants will learn how disconnected teams, siloed decision-making, and poorly governed technology deployments increase risk across campuses. Instruction emphasizes the importance of collaboration between IT, facilities, safety, and district leadership to ensure that security systems are not only effective, but also secure, compliant, and resilient.

The course explores common failure points including network-connected cameras, access control systems, vendor integrations, credential management, cloud services, and third-party risk, while providing practical guidance on governance, policy, and oversight. Special attention is given to leadership accountability, budgeting decisions, and long-term planning for converged security environments.

Designed for both technical and non-technical leaders, this course equips K–12 decision-makers with the knowledge needed to ask the right questions, align stakeholders, and reduce risk—without requiring deep technical expertise. The program meets continuing education standards and supports professional development in school safety, cybersecurity governance, and risk management.
