Course Description

Managing Through Chaos: Lessons in Navigating a Large-Scale Crisis Event is an 8-hour executive-focused professional course designed to prepare security, risk, and operational leaders to effectively lead through high-impact, fast-moving crisis situations.

Led by Joe Doa, Vice President of Corporate Security at MGM Resorts International, this course draws on firsthand experience managing complex, large-scale incidents in one of the world’s most dynamic hospitality and entertainment environments. Participants gain practical insight into what leadership looks like when systems are stressed, information is incomplete, and decisions must be made in real time.

Instruction focuses on crisis leadership, command structure, decision-making under uncertainty, cross-functional coordination, and executive-level communication during major incidents such as active threats, mass disruption events, critical infrastructure failures, and reputational crises. Emphasis is placed on aligning security, operations, legal, communications, and executive leadership during moments where missteps can have long-term consequences.

Rather than theoretical models, the course emphasizes lessons learned, real-world challenges, and leadership realitiesthat arise when managing crises at scale. Participants will examine how preparation, culture, and disciplined response frameworks influence outcomes before, during, and after a crisis.

While grounded in hospitality and gaming environments, the principles taught are broadly applicable to large enterprises, critical infrastructure, entertainment venues, resorts, and complex multi-site organizations. The course is appropriate for senior leaders, emerging executives, and operational decision-makers responsible for crisis response and organizational resilience.

Designed to meet continuing education standards, this course supports professional development in crisis management, enterprise security leadership, and organizational resilience.
