Course Description
This 8 hour comprehensive course examines active-threat and large-scale mass casualty incident emergency planning and response in educational settings through a multidisciplinary, evidence-based lens. Participants explore the historical evolution of US school-based violence and active threat incidents to understand trends, lessons learned, and implications for contemporary prevention and response strategies. The course emphasizes proactive emergency planning with nationally recognized school safety and emergency management frameworks.
Instruction addresses coordinated response protocols, highlighting the roles of school administrators, educators, school safety personnel, law enforcement, emergency management, fire/EMS, and mental health partners. Participants will examine decision-making under stress, incident command integration, and crisis communication strategies following critical incidents.
The course will include a case study of a recent active-threat incident and several relevant “takeaways’’ that participants can take back and implement in their schools.
Although the course focuses on K-12 schools, the information provided is highly relevant to parochial, private, and higher education environments. The presentation can be adjusted to accommodate participants' experience levels, ranging from introductory to advanced.
Designed to meet continuing education standards, this course supports professional competency development in school safety planning, crisis response coordination, and organizational resilience in K–12 environments.
